Beyond Words

This film gives a gentle insight into a 2 year research partnership project that asks the question what is the impact of the unspoken in music making and how do we include those who struggle to communicate with words? Is there something this can tell us about how we ensure people with barriers to communication are fully included in society? What can we learn from music making that can be shared with arts practitioners as well as those in other fields? And how can the notion of 'post-humanism' shed light on our understanding? 

The 'Beyond Words' project is a partnership between Plymouth Music Zone and Plymouth University Institute of Education with Professor Jocey Quinn and Claudia Blandon leading the academic team. 

Beyond Words is one of the first round of 8 national projects funded by Arts Council England to help better understand the value and impact of the arts on individuals as well as on society as a whole. Other projects include the likes of the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Royal College of Music and the Tate London.

The Beyond Words project culminated in a 2 day International Conference at Plymouth University on 14/15 March 2017 looking at how to privilege the unspoken in arts practice and communities. Full details can be found here:
